Non Western Art of the Outdoors: Chile
Art of Nature
Non Western art is art that is created in any country in the world other then the countries that are located in North America and Europe. With this in mind, there are a bunch of different countries throughout the world, who have their own styles of art. Chile has it's own styles of art, but there are a number of different art pieces that are made in Chile, which are similar to art pieces from other countries. There is a large variety of art that has been made in Chile, but there have been a number of Chilean artists who have done landscape paintings within the last 100 years to show the beautiful landscapes of Chile.
Un Lugar en las Montañas (A Place in the Mountains):
Lines
Eileen Lunecke used lines in her painting to portray feeling. She uses white curved lines for the mountains in the background, as well as a big curved line to depict the edge of the green piece of land located in the bottom of the painting. These curved lines were used in the painting to portray comfort and ease. She did this so we would know that we can be comfortable and at ease as we are enjoying the view of the mountains.
Color
Eileen Lunecke used color in her painting to make it look more realistic. She used darker colors on the big, blue mountain on the left of the painting, so we can know that the sun is off to the left of the painting.
Shape
Eileen Lunecke used shape in her painting, so we would be drawn to the sky. She uses bottomless triangles to create the tops of the mountains, as well as for lower parts of the mountains, so we would notice the clear sky with the thin, white clouds. She did this so we would pay attention to the clear, never ending sky. This allows us to know that it is a nice day outside, while it is also used so we will know that the land goes on for a long, long ways.
Southern Glacier:
Lines
Monica Casanegra used lines in her painting to convey feeling. She uses a bunch of curved lines for the pieces of ice in the water, as well as for portions of the shoreline, and for the clouds in the sky. She uses these curved lines so we know that we can be comfortable and at ease when we are in the outdoors, enjoying the peaceful waves of the ocean.
Color
Monica Casanegra uses color to make her painting more realistic. She uses darker colors for portions of the water so we can know that the water is deeper in those areas. She also uses darker colors in portions of the water, to depict the reflection of the land onto the water.
Texture
Monica Casanegra was able to create a sense of texture in her painting, by blending the colors together in spots. Casanegra blended the colors together more for the water, so we can know that the top of the water is smooth, whereas the land is made up of colors that do not blend as well.
Chilean Mountain Landscape:
Lines
Benito Catalan uses a couple of horizontal lines to depict the edge of the water, in order to portray distance and calmness. He does this, so we can know that it is a nice, peaceful day, and that there is distance to the painting, where the mountains are set back a ways.
Color
Benito Catalan uses color in his painting to make it look more realistic. He uses dark color on the right of the lake, that is used to be a reflection of the trees.
Form
Benito Catalan creates form in his painting by using color. He uses dark colors on the top of the mountains, so we can know that there is a third dimension to the painting. The shadows are only on certain parts of the mountain, since those parts of the mountain are not being hit by the sun. This is because those parts of the mountain are facing us, since the sun is located off to the right of the painting, where it is also set back into the distance. This is used to create form, as we are able to see that there is a third dimension to the painting.

Hello, Ivan! These are all beautiful landscape paintings. They all have a satisfying sharpness about them. The land features used in each one cut into the sky and surroundings whether it’s a mountain or a glacier. My favorite is definitely the first one you picked. I love the way the artist used lines in this piece. The highlights of the mountain contribute to their gorgeous texture. The curve of the land on the bottom half of the piece makes the painting feel like it continues on beyond its borders. The colors are bright and saturated, and it lends to the vitality of the land. The use of yellow makes the greens pop, and they’re both colors that elicit growth, abundance, and life. Thank you for sharing these pieces!
ReplyDeleteSouthern Glacier is so eye-catching! I love the use of deep blue and purple and the way the artist sweeps the color at the top of the painting to portray what seems to be clouds over the glacier bay. I wonder what inspired the artist to paint this, I can't imagine that there are glacier in Chile? I always thought it was a tropical area but maybe there's more than I'm aware of. Either way, this was a great country to choose art from and it's interesting to see how landscape paintings changed from earlier years to present time.
ReplyDeleteLandscape art is something that I am so fond of, and I grew really excited seeing that your blog post is based around it. Highlighting the beautiful landscape art of Chile opened my eyes to their gorgeous scenery that I otherwise would not be aware of.
ReplyDeleteEileen Lunecke’s, Un Lugar en las Montañas (2017) is an interesting take on landscape art as it looks like the audience is peering through a fish-eye lens. The landscape looks rather realistic otherwise, but the added feature of curving the mountains around the canvas is almost otherworldly. Maybe it is because the artist wanted those unfamiliar with Chile to see how otherworldly Chile’s stunning landscape is.
